Mini Marathon - Great News....

Many thanks for the support that you gave for the Marathon sponsorthip for Tony Lawless.  Today was the big day and hopefully Tony enjoyed his run and has his feet up being pampered after his hard day.  Final figure is not in yet but currently it's around the €750.00 total, and this will help to kit out part of the cost of the final 4 white boards.  Well done Tony - the school is very proud of you!

Welcome to the world of blogging!

In June 2009, St. Brigids Girls School in Killester changed the format of the fundraising committee and set up a Parents Committee.  The aim of this group is two fold, to support the school in any manner seen fit by the school staff and Bord of Management and also to try and fund raise for the school.

A Charter has been written to set out the function of the Parents Association and it is a work in progress so please give us some time to see if this is workable and we will make changes as necessary.

We hope that this blog will have a number of funcitons, keep parents and students informed on what is happening at the school - a place that we can put up a copy of the school calendar (that we all lose!), make comments (constructive please!) about what fundraising ideas we have and what you might want to see done for the school.  Show how your money raised was spent, with photos of white boards etc.  We will try and keep you up to date on the sports achievements of the school - wins on the Basketball team, Camogie and Soccer.... Lots to do eh!

St Brigid’s GNS Parents Association

This association has been set up with the aims of involving the parents of the students of the school to the fullest possible extent under the provisions of the Education Act 1998 to promote the interests of all of the students in co-operation with the Board of Management, the Principal and teaching staff of the school

The Aims of this Association are:

*     To provide communication between the Body of Parents and the Principal and staff of the school.  This is NOT appropriate where there is a personal issue or dispute between the parents/students and the teaching staff

*     To engage in fund-raising activities as the financial situation of the school demands it.  This also promotes engagement between the local community and the school.

*     To allow and to promote the involvement of parents, in consultation with the Principal, in the operation of the school.

*     To advise the school regarding latest equipment, technology or other initiatives to further the personal development of the students.

*     To allow parents to advise in the formulation of school policies on issues such as healthy lunches to bullying

*     To act as a resource for advice and information to the school on any aspect of the maintenance of the school

In order to achieve these Aims the Association shall...

*     Elect a committee to carry out its aims of no more than 16 parents, ideally this would be 1 parent from each class but this may not be possible.  The committee meeting are open to all parents and they can vote on the issue that they may bring to the committee but all other business is for a committee vote only.

*     Nominations will be sought before and during the AGM for committee members with each nominee being nominated and seconded from the floor.  Voting is over once 16 members have been selected.

*     This committee shall elect from its numbers, officers namely, the Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary.  Each officer shall serve a maximum of 2 school years.  At each AGM, all office-holders resign before offering themselves for re-election if permitted.

*     Meet on a monthly basis, currently this is the second Monday evening of the calendar month

*     The quorum for the meeting shall be at least one officer and 4 other committee members.

*     The AGM of all parents shall be held in May/June at the end of the school year.  The accounts for the school year shall be presented to this meeting.  Any ideas for fund-raising may be raised at this meeting together with a review of the school year.  The Principal shall be invited to attend this meeting.

*     The Parents’ representatives on the Board of Management are elected for a 4-year term.  If their term has expired, the election of these representatives is carried out at the AGM also.  Prior to the meeting, a notice should be issued to all parents inviting nominations for these positions.  A written ballot will take place during the AGM.

*     One or all of the officers of the committee shall arrange to meet with the Principal periodically as arranged between them to discuss the plans for both the school building and activities for the academic year.  Requirements for fund-raising are also discussed based on these plans. This is also the forum for discussing any issues that are concerning the parents at any time.  Feedback from the monthly teachers’ meeting if relevant can be delivered to the parents in this meeting.

*     The Treasurer and the Chairperson of the Parents’ Association are the signatories on the association’s bank account, currently held at AIB Bank, Artane.  A motion confirming the signatories needs to be passed at the first committee meeting. A letter signed by the Secretary of the Committee confirming this motion, together with personal ID of both signatories are required by AIB Bank in order to make the necessary changes to the bank account.  The 2 officers should go to the Bank in person to make these arrangements.

*     The Association may from time to time establish a sub-committee to deal with specific events or items e.g. Sports Evening.  These sub-committees must report to the Association committee and are not permitted to have a bank account or to enter financial transactions.  Only the committee can vote on such matters and all expenditure should be voted upon by the meeting and minuted by the Secretary.

*     The Association should join the National Parents Council and arrange for a representative to attend the area meetings arranged from time to time.  These provide great support and guidance on a range of matters relating to parenting and the school relationship.  They also provide speakers on various topics of interest to parents.  The Association may hold such information evenings for parents.
